All Tablets are pre-configured to connect to the wireless network automatically. If you experience a network connectivity problem, try the steps below.

Wireless on-campus at D-E

Windows Vista

SYMPTOM:Our SSID, "DES", seems to appear 2 or more times on Vista 5010 tablets OR the tablets can't connect to the Internet.
SOLUTION: Remove the duplicate SSIDs and re-enter the schools SSID. See Multiple CLASSROOM networks on Vista for directions.

Also, make sure that the Network is LOCAL and INTERNET. The network should be labeled PRIVATE.

Windows XP

  1. Ensure that the Wireless switch (the "radio") is "on"
    1. On Fujitsu 4xxx tablets, this switch is on the left hand side of the computer. On the Fujitsu 5010, it is on the front.

  2. Ensure that your wireless connection is enabled.
    1. Start/Connect To/Show All connections
    2. Right click on the wireless connection
    3. select "enable"

  3. If the radio is on, and you are still not connected, running a repair on the connection usually works
    1. Start Menu / "Connect to" / Show all connections
    2. Find the Wireless connection, and right click on it.
    3. Select "Repair" from the context menu.

  4. When a repair doesn't work, hibernating or restarting the computer will sometimes work. (Hibernating will shut off your computer but all programs and documents will be open and ready to go when you restart.)
    1. Save all open documents as a safeguard. (You don't have to close them.)
    2. Start Menu/Shut Down
    3. Choose Hibernate under "What do you want the computer to do?" and click OK.

  5. Be sure that Windows is configured to manage your wireless settings
    1. Start Menu / "Connect to" / Show all connections
    2. Find the Wireless connection, and right click on it.
    3. Select Properties.
    4. Click on the middle tab that says "Wireless Networks"
    5. Be sure that the box that says "Use windows to manage my wireless network settings" is CHECKED.

  6. If there is no Wireless Networks tab, disabling Intel ProSet may restore it.
    1. Run Start > All Programs > Intel Proset Wireless.
    2. Go to the Advanced menu and select "Use Windows to manage WiFi".

  7. Check that the school network name is labeled AUTOMATIC. If you see that it's MANUAL, you will need to remove it and ADD it again.
    1. To add, click on the button ADD, enter school network name DES in all caps.
      • If you don't know the school network password, come to the Taub Center, contact the Computer Services Help Desk at x3826, or email help 'at' d-e.org.
    2. click OK
    3. wait a few seconds and check if you are connected.

  8. Some wireless problems as well as slow boot time have been attributed to too many SSIDs (networks) configured on the machine. To check this, do the following:
    1. Go to START / CONNECT TO / SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS.
    2. Right-click on the properties of the WIRELESS connection.
    3. Click on the WIRELESS tab at the top.
    4. There you will see a box or list of weird names like linksys, belkin etc. I have found that if you have more than 5 you should REMOVE the ones you don't need.
    5. Be careful not to remove the one for the school network.
    6. Click "OK" and see if this was the solution.
